On 20 May 2002 East Timor became an independent state under the official name “Timor Leste”. Timorese independence was the result of a referendum, held in August 1999, and a three year process supervised by the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET).
The Security Council established the United Nations Mission of Support in East Timor (UNMISET) by its resolution 1410 (2002). The mandate of UNMISET was extended for a final six months until 20 May 2005 by the SC resolution 1573 of 16 November 2004.
On April 28, 2005, the Security Council established the UN Office in Timor-Leste, a special political mission, to support the development of state institutions, the police, the Border Patrol Unit and to provide training in observance of democratic governance and human rights.
